Sports betting handle in Arizona fell month-on-month during April, though the $535.7m wagered by players was up year-on-year.
The monthly handle was 4.5% ahead of $512.9m in April 2022 but 16.9% less than $644.8m in March of this year.
Of this total, $531.2m was spent betting on sports online, while just $3.7m was wagered at retail sportsbooks across the state.
Consumers won $486.5m from betting, leaving $48.0m in adjusted gross event wagering revenue before free bets. This was 64.4% ahead of $29.2m last year but 10.1% behind $53.4m in March this year.
Some $47.7m of monthly revenue was generated online, while the remaining $234,996 came from retail betting.
After deducting $13.6m in free bets and promotional credits, this left adjusted gross revenue of $34.4m. This was up 108.5% year-on-year but 7.3% behind March’s total.
Online betting accounted for $34.0m of the adjusted revenue total, with retail’s share at $231,071.
Sports betting tax amounted to $3.4m, with mobile taxed at a rate of 10% and retail 8%.
New licenses
In other news, the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) has opened the application process for new sports betting licenses.
One event wagering license reserved for Arizona tribes and two event wagering licenses for Arizona sports franchises will be available.
The application window for the licenses will open on August 1 and close on August 15, 2023. Applicants must submit their completed applications within this timeframe to be considered.
Arizona currently has 17 mobile sports betting operators and 25 retail wagering locations in the state.
