Combined online sports betting and igaming revenue in Michigan increased 13.2% year-on-year to $175.4m (£141.5m/€164.2m) in August, with this total almost level month-on-month.
Gross internet gaming and sports betting receipts from commercial and tribal operators is ahead of $154.9m in August 2022. It is also only slightly below $176.1m worth of online gambling revenue in Michigan in July this year.
Online casino gaming gross receipts hit $152.2m, up 16.3% on last year but behind July’s $153.9m total.
Meanwhile, gross sports betting receipts slipped 3.3% year-on-year to $23.2m but was 3.1% more than July. Handle was almost level year-on-year in August at $218.5m.
Adjusted gross receipts surpasses $153m in Michigan
Looking at adjusted gross receipts, which account for promotional spending, the combined total from igaming and sports betting hit $153.1m. This was 14.6% more than $133.6m in August 2022 but 1.0% behind July.
Adjusted igaming gross receipts increased 16.8% to $137.2m but adjusted sports betting receipts slipped 1.2% to $15.9m.
Internet gaming tax payments amounted to $28.6m and online sports betting tax $1.1m. A further $7.3m was collected from Detroit’s three commercial casinos including $6.9m in igaming tax and $368,596 worth of sports betting tax.
Some 15 operators offered online gambling in August. However, Odawa Casinos withdrew internet sports betting on 1 August, reducing the number of Michigan sports operators to 14.
Detroit casino revenue down 1.1% in August
Publication of the online statistics follows hot on the heels of data for the land-based casino sector.
Revenue from the three commercial casinos in Detroit fell 1.1% year-on-year to $104.9m in August. The Michigan city also reported a month-on-month drop.
Monthly aggregate revenue was lower than $106.1m in August 2022. The monthly total was also 2.2% behind the $107.2m reported in Detroit in July this year.
Breaking this down, $104.6m came from table games and slots, up 0.1% on last year. Sports betting qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) hit $322,186 and handle $10.0m.
MGM remains the market leader with a 47% market share, ahead of MotorCity 30% and the Hollywood Casino at Greektown with 23%.
