Sports betting revenue doubled in Indiana last month as players starved of their favourite sports began to shift their attention to other games.
iGaming Business and Ficom Leisure are delighted to present the Indiana iGaming Dashboard, providing a monthly breakdown of the latest figures from the Midwestern State’s regulated gambling market.
The data will be updated monthly following the official release of figures from the Indiana Gaming Commission.
Though still significantly down on some of the highs seen since the Hoosier state launched its regulated sports betting market last November, the $3.2m in GGR for May was twice that of April’s $1.6m.
The revenue figure came from handle of $37.3m, a 41.8% increase from the $26.3m of April.
Interestingly, 82.3% of bets were taken on sports in the ‘other’ category, with the US favourites of football and baseball taking just 1.2% and 2.6%, respectively, of the action. Parlay bets accounted for 13.9% of the market.
This suggests that rather than wait for major sports to return, at least some of the state’s punters have instead started betting on more niche events.
All of the revenue was from online betting as retail outlets remained closed during the month due to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
This absence of retail has seen the DFS giants increase their dominant positions, taking them to a combined share of more than 90% of the state’s sports betting market.
DraftKings, via its partnership with Ameristar Casino, now accounts for 57.4% of the sports betting market, albeit this was down from 61.4% in April.
It was largely its long-time rival FanDuel, which is partnered with Blue Chip Casino, that scooped up its losses, extending its market share to 33.4% in May, up from 27.4% in April.
The remainder of the market was taken by French Lick Casino, at 5.5%, and Belterra Casino, at 3.6%.
