There were signs of a rebound in Iowa’s sports betting market last month as the number of bets placed more than quadrupled month-on-month.
iGaming Business and Ficom Leisure are delighted to present the Iowa iGaming Dashboard, providing a monthly breakdown of the latest figures from the Hawkeye State’s regulated gambling market.
The data will be updated monthly following the official release of figures from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.
Though retail outlets remained closed due to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, online betting activity increased significantly during May, with handle rising to $7.0m, up from just $1.6m in April.
Most of the funds bet were returned to punters in winnings, however, and sportsbooks in the state made GGR of just $0.5m last month, up from $0.2m the previous month.
The retail closure has seen those casinos without an online offering lose their entire market, with the FanDuel-powered Diamond Jo Casino in Worth the biggest faller.
Prior to Covid-19, the casino had a 17% share of the overall sports betting market.
On the other hand, those casinos with online offerings have gained market share during the pandemic.
The William Hill-powered Prairie Meadows saw its share of the overall market rise to 49.1% in May, taking the casino close to accounting for half of the state’s sports betting market by revenues.
Via its partnership with Isle Casino Hotel in Waterloo, William Hill picked up a further 15.6% share of the market last month, though this was slightly down from 17.6% in April.
Draft Kings-powered Wild Rose Jefferson took the next largest share of the market with 7.7%, a slight uptick from April’s 7.4%.
The dominance of the casinos with online offerings may be short-lived, however, with retail outlets reopening in the state throughout June.
