Indiana set new sports betting revenue and handle records in January, according to the latest monthly results published by the Indiana Gaming Commission.
Adjusted gross revenue for January totalled $29.3m, up 127.1% from the same month last year, while the amount was also 15.8% higher than the previous record of $25.3m set in November 2020.
Players wagered $348.2m on sports in January, more than double the $170.8m bet in the corresponding month in 2020, and also 11.2% more than December 2020’s previous record of $313.1m.
Operators paid a total of $2.8m in sports wagering tax during the month, up from $1.2m in January of last year.
Basketball was the sport of choice for many players in Indiana. Some $133.2m was wagered on basketball during the month, ahead of football on $77.6m and baseball with just $56,796. Parlay betting amounted to $86.1m, while other betting reached $50.3m in January.
In terms of operator performance, Penn National Gaming’s Ameristar Casino and its DraftKings sportsbook took top spot in January with $10.7m and a handle of $134.4m.
Blue Chip Casino and its FanDuel sportsbook were second with $6.2m in revenue and a $90.6m handle, followed by Belterra Casino and its BetMGM sportsbook with $5.0m and a $57.0m handle.
The Penn National Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg was the only other casino to post in excess of $1.0m in revenue for the month, with its revenue reaching $3.2m and handle $26.8m.
