The South Dakota Commission on Gaming has announced that the state will begin to accept applications for sports wagering licenses from July 1, along with several new rules that will become part of the sports betting bill passed in March.
Per the new rules, sports betting will also be added to the list of approved gaming types. License applications, meanwhile, were made available on the Commission site yesterday (May 20), and will be accepted by the commission from July 1.
The new rules include a $5,000 mandatory application fee for providers that want to offer sports wagering in their facilities. This is in addition to the $2,000 license fee and $2,000 annual renewal fee outlined in the original bill.
In addition, the new rules dictate specific language for sports wagering equipment record inspection, along with the prohibition of gambling equipment suppliers from gambling on sports betting equipment or manufacturing slot machines.
The rules also prohibit an applicant or licensed premises from refusing to produce records when asked by the commission, as well as outlining measures for security and surveillance.
The original bill outlined that in order for customers to place mobile bets at a licensed casino in the city, customers must first register in-person. It did not state how much tax operators would have to pay.
The commission will send the amendment to the state legislature’s Interim Rules Review Committee for approval.
Senate Bill 44 bill passed the the South Dakota Senate by a vote of 32-2 in February and the state’s House of Representatives in early March by 58-8. It was then signed into law by Gov. Kristi Noem in March to legalized sports betting in Deadwood, South Dakota.
The legislation was developed after South Dakota voters approved a constitutional amendment in November 2020 to allow sports betting in the city of Deadwood.
