DraftKings files patent for new game development arm

News

Fantasy sports and betting business DraftKings has a filed a patent application for a new game development corporation named Black Throne Studios.

The corporation is registered in Delaware and will offer “electronic game development services; electronic casino game development services; casino game development services”.

It is unclear whether the entity will be spun off from the core DraftKings business, or operate as a subsidiary of the company.

While DraftKings operate a large B2C online gaming business through DraftKings Casino, they have not previously not been a B2B igaming game development provider. The business has been contacted for comment on the matter.

In May, the business completed its acquisition of Golden Nugget Online Gaming with a view to broadening its appeal and enhancing its igaming offering.

While it has not been active as a B2B provider in online casino, it offers its sportsbook technology to third parties. It took ownership of its own tech stack through the acquisition of SBTech, a combination that also saw it become a listed entity through special purpose acquisition company Diamond Eagle Acquisition Corp.

The operator is also advertising for a manager of game design and operations, indicating that DraftKings is hiring staff in addition to setting up the legal entity.

DraftKings has a large presence in North America, recently launching in Ontario  and rolled out igaming in West Virginia.
