News

Indiana set records in betting handle and revenue in September, as the return of the NFL helped sportsbooks in the Hoosier state to their most successful month to date.

Amounts wagered soared almost 500% year-on-year to $207.5m, with adjusted gross revenue growing 66.8% to $14.3m.  This in turn led to a record monthly tax take, of $1.4m.

Players staked $173.1m online – another new record – and $34.4m in person.

Before adjustments, revenue came to $10.7m, of which $7.5m was made online and $3.2m in retail.

DraftKings’ sportsbook at Penn National Gaming’s Ameristar Casino led the way in both handle, at $95.1m, and in revenue, at $5.5m.

Blue Chip Casino and its Fanduel sportsbook followed, bringing in $3.3m on $57.7m of handle, while Penn National’s Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg was in third, bringing in $2.3m with players staking $16.1m.

Belterra Casino – with its BetMGM sportsbook – fourth as players staked $13.9m and the sportsbook took in $1.4m.

The return of the NFL meant that football took back the top spot as the most popular sport for betting, as players staked $48.4m. Basketball followed with $34.2m while $30.5m was staked on baseball. A further $50.6m was staked in parlay bets and $43.1m on other sports.
