Sports betting decline hits MI igaming revenue in June

Reduced sports betting activity in Michigan in June led to a month-on-month drop in overall online gambling revenue for the state.

Combined gross igaming and sports betting receipts amounted to $169.3m. This was down 8.9% from $185.5m in May this year, representing the third consecutive month of decline in the state.

However, the total was some 23.7% ahead of $136.9m in June 2022.

Online casino gaming gross receipts amounted to $151.0m, a year-on-year climb of 24.2% and marginally ahead of May. Gross sports betting receipts also increased 18.8% from June 2022 to $18.3m, but was 48.0% lower than $35.2m in May.

It was also reported that sports betting handle for the month amounted to $227.9m. This was 15.6% behind last year’s total and also 21.0% below May’s spend.

Adjusted gross receipts growth for Michigan

Michigan also reported adjusted gross receipts, which account for promotional spending. In June, combined adjusted igaming and sports betting receipts was $146.1m, down 7.2% on May but 27.7% higher than June 2022.

Online casino adjusted gross receipts was $146.1m, up 25.1% year-on-year, while sports betting adjusted gross receipts jumped 83.9% to $9.2m.

Operators in the state paid $28.9m in total taxes in June. Some $28.4m was paid in online casino tax and a further $545,632 in sports betting tax.

The three Detroit casinos also paid $7.4m in online taxes to the City of Detroit. In addition, tribal operators made $3.5m in payments to governing bodies.

The online figures come after details were also published about Detroit’s three land-based commercial casinos for June.

During the month, aggregate revenue for the venues amounted to $101.5m. Some $101.9m came from table games and slots, but the total figure was pushed down by a negative yield of $395,606 from sports betting.

MGM remained the city’s leader with a total market share of 46%. MotorCity followed with 32%, then the Hollywood Casino at Greektown on 22%.
